2025 Pre-Smart-A-Thon Mixer
The Education Fund extends a special THANK YOU to Michael and Peter Smith of BOB SMITH TOYOTA, for once again sponsoring our Pre-Smart-A-Thon Mixer with the Crescenta Valley Chamber of Commerce. On Tuesday, March 18, 2025 we gathered at the SMART window of the Toyota Showroom to kick-off the 2025 SMART CHALLENGE CELEBRATION. The gallery below shows photos from the mixer!

Patty Steur presents a grant check to Nora McCarl, Executive Director of Advancement for USC Verdugo Hills Hospital and Adria Navarro, MSW, PhD, Program Manager for the USC VHH Community Resource Center for Aging. The grant of $1,700 is to help publicize and support the program that serves families and seniors throughout the foothills.

Chris Waldheim and Mary Pinola present a check for $2,500 to Joanne Pingry, Director of Mission Advancement for the Crescenta Canada YMCA, to support the purchase of a small play structure at the Learning Tree Preschool.

The bright and amazingly quick-witted students of Crescenta Valley High School ComedySportz and their advisor, Gavin Hall, get ready to charm the crowd with their great insights and humor. The program received a grant of $3,662 to purchase a new Apple Mac laptop that will support the sound and music for ComedySportz:HSL matches for the school and Crescenta Valley community.

Aimee Beck and students representing the CVHS award-winning Robotics Program receive their grant of $2,500 to help underwrite the cost of building a Prototyping Center. Students will gain real-world engineering experience and will have support to undertake full builds projects.

Nancy Davidson (front left), Executive Director of Living Beauty Cancer Foundation, describes the support programs the Foundation provides thousands of women of all ages suffering from cancer - at no cost to the participants. The Foundation received a grant of $5,000 to help launch an online platform to help women connect with one another, thus creating a community support system. Eleanor Wacker (right) presents Whitney Katzer, CVHS Math Teacher, a grant check for $1,937. The grant funded the purchase of materials for Ms. Katzer's “thinking classroom” and the purchase of an iPad to create and share digital notes with her students. The high school also received $1,650 to purchase ten calculators supporting instruction in advanced math topics.

Bobbi Parker presents Leila Bell, President of the CVHS Instrumental Music Foundation, with a check for $3,400 to fund equipment for the CVHS Band Color Guard. The Band steps out first and is followed by the CVHS Band Color Guard which performs with synchronized movements and elaborate dance routines.
